An odyssey, 2015

It has been quite an eventful year. An odyssey actually.

Who knew water had the ability to wreck havoc and create hope at the same time. On one hand, where finding scant amounts of water on Mars invoked hopes of life on a distant planet, Chennai floods washed out all hopes for survival for southern India.

Who knew German automobile engineered cars which have been lauded across the world for decades would face slander this year when “People’s car” or Volkswagen put rogue software on 428000 cars with four-cylinder diesel engines in order to tamper with emission test results.

Who knew man and nature would roar terror with the same intensity as if trying to prove their worth to each other. World saw the vicious side of both as one lead to the Migrant Crisis and the other costed lives and property of thousands in Nepal. The city of love wept as ISIS roared terror in Paris following their dreadful activities in Syria and Iraq. This eventually lead to a war between nations including Turkey, US, Syria, Iraq etc.

Who knew economy would fall miserably for Greece and China. While during Economic crisis Greek GDP suffered its worst decline becoming the first developed nation to fail to make an IMF loan repayment, following it, China’s stock markets crashed, creating widespread panic and dismay.

Law became forgiving this year, to the guilty as well as the innocent. While Salman Khan was cleared of all charges due to lack of evidence, the juvenile in the Nirbhaya Rape Case didn’t incur any punishment even after all the evidence and resentment by the masses just because our constitution refuses punishment to a juvenile or a person below the age of 18.

Not only did we see the vicious side of man, we also saw the humane side when Canada accepted refugees from Syria following the migration crisis. We saw that the heart of mankind beats within different geological boundaries, but still beats together , when people from countries across the world came together in support of the families of victims of the Paris attack.

No matter how hard terror pushes us apart, humanity prevails and brings us back together. The vicious beings are trying to melt the glue which adheres us together with the flame of their terror, but that flame isn’t good enough because that glue is only solidifying and strengthening more with every crisis we face.
